Analyze 4-5 Rhetorical Strategies
In his essay “Lying in Bed,” C.K. Chesterson utilizes his words to create images in the mind of the reader and uses ethos, pathos, and logos to express his feelings on the claim that walls should be painted in beautiful colors, without blankness, or repeatitive patterns. He uses ethos in quoting both the bible in support of his protest against the singularity of wallpaper and then quotes Cyrano de Bergerac as well. Chesterson has several long flowed sentances in which he eloquently displays his thoughts and ideas, this creates an ethos of an educated man. He then uses cliche phrases and metaphors that relate his ideas to that of innamimate and animate objects. “Cleanliness is not next to godliness nowadays, for cleanliness is made essential and godliness is regarded as an offence.”

In John Downe’s letter to his wife he utilizes rhetorical strategies that act as counter points to his invitation for his wife to come from England to the states. Without the luxeries of a phone, or personal communication this one letter must adequetly encourage hsi wife to come over once and for all. He utilizes the bandwagon strategy in implying that several immigrants and coming to the states every day in saying “More than 1000 emigrants came in the day after I landed, and there is four ships have arrived since with emigrants. But there is plenty of room yet, and will be for thousand years to come.” He then recognizes his wife’s possible counter arguements and disputes them by asserting that while several people are coming there is more room. He then speaks to her of the inexpensive foodstuffs and the acceptance the Americans have on any person no matter their economic situation.

Once pregnant a person has three choices in which to react to the situation 1. Keep the baby, 2. Have the baby and give it to a good home, or 3. Have an abortion. Such an issue is debated socially and in politics.
Pro-Life
Pregnancy can be prevented, one-hundred percent by abstinence, by not having sex. By using means of contrapception pregnancy can be avoided, unless in the case of a small percentage. Abortion is murder. While the United States tries and convicts those who have caused homocide in the United States, women are allowed to kill their unborn children and then walk away. How can it be considered a crime to kill a person who has lived several years of their life, but not a crime to kill an innocent unborn child? Pregnancy can be avoided. If a person is not in a commited relationship not financially, or emotionally ready to have a child they should not be having sex.
Pro-Choice
The government has to much power already and should not inflict their power in such a way as to make choices such as these for all of the American people. The government already takes our money, doesn’t give us health care, imposes laws, and makes us pay for an education not all of us recieve. The government should not make a choice for a woman. Politicians have proposed that abortion could be allowed for victims of incest, or rape. Even with this women will fall through the cracks and have a baby that could affect her present and future financial situations. A baby is forever and many women and sexually active teens are not ready for that time, emotional, or financial commitment. Women and Men not ready for such a commitment should not be punished.

The war in Vietnam received poor support from the American people both as “Soldier was looked down upon. The military doesn’t get paid much and here they were (in Vietnam) in a way that really didn’t impact us at all, it was a senseless war. We are spending millions and millions of dollars and a lot of them are dying and it was just about Vietnamese people, it was like why are we even there. It was their war,” Project Manager Bette Round accounted. Two of the most recognizable photos from the war were that of South Vietnamese General Nguyen Ngoc Loan shooting a Viet Cong Officer in the head and the other of refugees escaping the burning city of Trang Bang. These photos showed the American public of the devastation of the war.
In the first photo the gun is the focal point of the picture, as all around react to the sight of it and it brings the composition of this photo together in one singular message, the terror of the blood shed. With the dominance of the expression on the Viet Cong officers face the usual emphasis on the center of the photo is balanced by effective “white space,” that of the background setting the scene of the picture in the outskirts of urban Vietnam. The foreground of the photo is the executer’s back bringing him closer to the viewer and placing the background of the photo at a realistic and life-size distance away. And oddity of this photo is the Vietnamese soldier looking on, he is captivated by the scene and squints his eyes to be shielded by the sun. His casual stance in an execution scene offers the feeling that this occurs regularly. This photo follows the rule of thirds as the Executer is on one side, the arm is the center third, and the Viet Cong Officer takes the outer third. What this picture does not show is that the victim had killed eight men previously and this was his punishment.
Both this and the other photo have double monochromatic coloring and tinting systems. Offering the photos a greater sense of respect and it pushes the viewer to delve deeper into the photo. Oftentimes viewers will glance at a colored photo and not look into the actual purpose of the photo having been distracted by the bright colors. The photos do an excellent job portraying the emotions of the Vietnamese dominant in the images bringing an ethos perspective to the work as to persuade a sympathy and sadness for those pictured. The men drafted in the world were known as low-lifes, uneducated, and a little bit more then dirt. They hadn’t been able to escape the draft by marrying, entering college, or by having a significant influence on society. Printed by the media, this photo showed Americans and the world the fear in the eyes of the Vietnamese.
Children have a soft spot in the hearts of most worldwide, as they are generally thought of as innocent human beings not worthy of making their own decisions. As a result of this opinion, cruelties against children are heavily scorned. In the picture of Trang Bang the children wear expressions of fear and horror as they run away from their home town with American soldiers strutting behind them. In the back left corner one boy looks towards his home as he watches in horror as it is engulfed in flames. The composition of the children at different angles and lengths from the foreground creates the sense that the children are running out of the picture. Each child does not wear shoes, highlighting the poverty of the region. The dominant part of the photo is the boy standing in the front left corner and the naked girl in the center. The boy’s expression is of utter sadness captures the mutual feeling of all involved as he holds his mouth completely in fear with his eyes drying tears. The girl in the center is nine-year old Kim Phuc, her clothes previously on fire, to save herself she cast off her clothes, making this a powerful image.
In each military conflict pictures emerge taken by those witnessing the horrors, once printed by the media viewers gain new insights and opinion on the war. These images are those for the Vietnam War, they adorn many offices and the walls of homes. The photo from Trang Bang depicts that war is not between soldiers from opposing sides, that innocent bystanders are caught in the middle when their towns and villages are burned. It brings the war into a humanitarian issue instead of a conflict between two governments. The United States Government entered a war they had no direct consequence in the outcome, to prevent the indirect consequence of the Communist side of the Vietnamese from taking over the country and then spreading communism to other Asian Countries and then to the rest of the world.

Claim: In consequence to the diversity and nonsingularity of the United States Government American place it upon ourselves to conform as one instead of having that responsibility lay onto the government
Supporting Information: That the U.S. government is not concentrated, or in a “pure form” such as the totalitarian, or communist governments of other countries in which the We > I percepective is used. Other groups such as gangs and police groups push the Americans to congorms and a general opinion of the country and then a nice opinion from our neighbors. That instead of having government forced and encouraged conformity that Americans conformity is derived from social influences.

In the beginning of the selection, what complaint does Rassalas have against his sister’s method of argumentation?
He tells her that she should not imagine the world as such a bad place, that the things she reads in books do not define the world as it is now. That instead people waste time worrying.
Summarize the 2nd paragraph. Why is “calamity” not so bad?
He describes that people worry and worry yet have nothing to really worry about, that they shouldn’t be wasting their time. Calamity is a sense of peace and calm.
Why does Rasselas believe that “marriage is one of the means of happiness?” What is his sister’s response? His sister’s response is that marriage is instead a feeling of containment of women, while Rasselas believes that it helps men and women to be joined in a union of marriage.
